What is the relationship between consciousness and the material that carries it?</p> <hr> <h2 id="integrated-information-theory-iit">Integrated Information Theory (IIT)</h2> <p>Giulio Tononi&rsquo;s theory begins with a radical move: <strong>take consciousness as axiom, not something to be explained away.</strong></p> <h3 id="the-axioms">The Axioms</h3> <p>IIT starts from five self-evident properties of consciousness:</p> <ol> <li><strong>Existence</strong> — consciousness is real and undeniable; it exists from its own perspective</li> <li><strong>Composition</strong> — experiences have structure (color, shape, etc. structure visual experience)</li> <li><strong>Information</strong> — an experience specifies, distinguishes itself from other possible experiences</li> <li><strong>Integration</strong> — the elements of experience are interdependent, irreducible, unified</li> <li><strong>Exclusion</strong> — every experience has borders, flows at a particular speed</li> </ol> <h3 id="phi-φ--the-measure-of-consciousness">Phi (Φ) — The Measure of Consciousness</h3> <p>Consciousness is <strong>identical to</strong> integrated information.
